CREATE A MEMORY – VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers at Create A Memory are very special to us and we sincerely appreciate what each volunteer offers to the event and to the children.  Some might ask what exactly being a volunteer entails.  Volunteers have a few different options of what they can sign up for.  Volunteers have the option to sign up to be a captain.

Most importantly, we want the volunteers to have a chance to play baseball-related events and spend quality time with the children while enjoying a summer evening at Target Field with the children.  Below please find a list, brief description, schedule for the different categories of volunteers as well as what it means to be a captain:

Captains:

Captains typically take the lead and guide the children as well as new volunteers through the evening and through the rotations.  Captains can sign up to be with a team of children in which they would go to each event with the children and other volunteers and remain with that team for the entire event.  There are 20 teams of children, thus 20 team captains.

Captains can also sign up to be a captain of a specific activity in which they remain with that activity the whole evening as the different teams of children rotated through.  There are 9 events that need captains, which are: wiffleball, kickball, food and beverage, autograph table, baseball clinic, tour, softball, radar toss and home run derby.

As there is a little more responsibility on the captains, we ask that they attend the captain’s meeting held at our office that is held typically a month prior to the event. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss logistics, details of each position as well as answer any questions.

  • Food and Beverages Captain

Help to direct kids in the line to get their food and then back up to the stands to eat. Will help Target field staff in organizing the kids to make serving the food and beverages go as smoothly as possible.

Each team will have two consecutive time periods (approximately 40 minutes TOTAL) to break for food and drinks. The food and beverages includes: pizza, hot dogs, soda, and Blue Bunny ice cream, all provided by Target Field.

The food will be served inside of the First Base Lounge right below where the kids will gather for the opening ceremony (Sections 103 and 104).  The kids will get pizza, hot dogs, soda, and ice cream and bring the food and beverages outside to sit in the stands (Section 103 and 104).  Please help serve the food and direct the children outside to the stands.  No food or beverage is allowed on the field!

In addition, water will be served outside by entrance to the food lounge.  Please have cups of water ready for the children to take.

RAIN, HEAT OR SHINE food will still be served in the First Base Lounge.

All food and beverages volunteers should be on the field at 5:15 in the assigned food area.

CAM SECURITY: When not working food shift, please help us by making sure that everyone is at their rotations and are not wandering Target Field.

  • Home Run Derby Captain

The Captain’s responsibilities shall be to organize the volunteers as follows: pitcher, catcher, fielders, and one (1) to two (2) volunteers in the stands to return balls.

Each batter should get five (5) swings to ensure that each child gets a turn.  The idea is to hit a home run over the centerfield fence.  The plate should be moved closer or further from the fence depending upon the age or size of the child.

  • Radar Toss Captain

Each child is given the opportunity to throw a baseball at a target and have his/her throw “clocked” to determine how fast the ball was thrown. While the child is throwing the ball, a picture should be taken using a Polaroid camera. 2 volunteers take pictures of the kids throwing the ball.

  • Kickball Captain

The volunteers/captain organize the group so that one team is in the field and the other team is at bat. All of the children “at bat” stand in line and are given the opportunity to kick a pitch. There are NO strikeouts. Children who are having trouble will receive assistance from one of the volunteers. In the outfield, the children and volunteers help field the kicked balls. After the first team has 3 outs or bats once around the batting order, the teams switch. Repeat with other team until time runs out.

  • Softball Captain

The volunteers/captain organize the group so that one team is in the field and the other team is at bat.  All of the children at bat stand in line and are given the opportunity to hit a pitch.  There are no strikeouts.  Children who are having trouble will receive assistance from one of the volunteers.  In the outfield, the children and volunteers help field the hit balls.  After the entire first team has had a chance to bat, then the teams switch.  THERE ARE SOFT-SOFTBALLS FOR THIS EVENT

  • Wiffleball Captain

The volunteers organize the group so that one team is in the field and the other team is at-bat.

  • Baseball Clinic with Steve Winfield

A baseball clinic will be run for the kids by Steve Winfield.  Organize the children and other volunteers.  Help out wherever Steve needs it.

  • Running the Bases Captain

Volunteers help and direct the kids:  to run the around the bases, and then return to the stands with their team in a timely manner. (Line up the kids at home plate and one send the kids to run the bases.)

  • Autograph Table Captain

Volunteers help form and manage the lines.  Make sure every child gets a turn to receive an autograph.

  • Tour of Target Field Captain

Volunteers help keep the children together on the tour and assure that no child wanders off or is left behind, as well as to help keep the children on task.

Volunteers:

Volunteers have the same options as the captains to sign up for either events or teams.  Depending on the requests and the number of volunteers that sign up, there are typically 5 volunteers and 1 captain at each event and with each team.  We always welcome more volunteers!

Times:

The time that volunteers and captains are asked to arrive at Target Field the day of the event is dependent on the event they signed up for.  Below are the times the volunteers and captains are expected to arrive:

  • Registration volunteers and captains are expected to arrive at Target Field at 3:30p.m.
